| The Cedar Valley Adult Soccer
Association was conceived in mid-July of 2004 when Scott Wiens
suggested to Kevin Wolff that maybe someone ought to try to
organize a league out of the growing number of people
participating in very informal but regular pick-up games.
Kevin mentioned the idea to Carolyn Wolff, who said
“I’ll do it so I can make sure I can play!”
At that Sunday’s pick-up game, Kevin ran into Kathy Kakoyianni-Bering
who agreed we needed a league and the idea was off and
running.
Kevin, Kathy, and Carolyn, met with
Bryan
Foster from the Cedar Valley Soccer Officials Association and
“Mr. Cedar Valley Soccer” Ira Simet
to draw on their experience.
With a few good nuggets in hand, we set up a few
guidelines for how we wanted the first season to go. Kevin
and Kathy then made a very informal presentation to the Cedar
Valley Youth Soccer Association Board of Directors at their
July meeting. We were granted approval to negotiate fees for
use of the fields at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in
Waterloo, Iowa
. Having made
arrangements for top-notch fields and officials, all we had
left to do was find enough players.
Most of the publicity for the league was done by email and
word of mouth. Many
thanks to the CVYSA community coordinators who helped to
spread the word. Registration was held during the first two
weeks of August 2004. We
were hoping for 40 players to fill 4 8v8 teams.
We got 72. After
some discussion, we decided to build 6 11v11 teams despite the
small rosters and continued to make appeals for “Guest
Players” to use as subs.
The first game was held
September 12, 2004
.
The guests came in numbers and many have joined mid-season.
By the end of the season, we had over 95 registered
players. What a
great problem to have!
Since that first season, player numbers have fluctuated,
but we have a pretty steady core of players that typically
form 6 teams that move between Full Field and Small format
leagues. Our concentration is on playing for fun, and no
experience is necessary.
